Ward Jennings - Controller

Q: How long have you been employed here at Able Steel?
A: I started at Able on August 24th of 2004, which puts me at 5 years now.

Q: What is your role?
A: My primary role is to publish monthly, quarterly & yearly financial statements. Generating monthly active job cost data, collect progress billings, payments, manage cash flow & investments. In addition I manage all bonding requirements, insurance matters, contractor pre-qualifications, human resources & monitor the IT as well as a wide variety of special projects.

Q: Where did you graduate from College & what was your major?
A: I graduated from ASU with an undergraduate degree in accounting, and received my MBA from Shippensburg State College, PA.

Q: What do you enjoy doing with your time off, do you have any hobbies?
A: I am an avid hiker and enjoy boating in the summertime. 

Q: What experience do you have in the Construction Industry?
A: I worked as a Controller for a variety of Sub-Contractors, was a Jobsite Superintendent and was a residential general contractor.

Q: What made you want to work Able Steel?
A: Initially it was the challenge to install a new accounting system to integrate payroll into job cost & both into the accounting system. Today, I work at Able Steel because I believe that we are the very best Steel Company in Arizona, and working here I try to help Able Steel stay at the leading edge of technology.

Q: What are the biggest challenges you see for the future of Construction?
A: Steel Fabrication being performed by out of state Fabricators and general weakness in the Arizona Construction Market.

Q: Are there any groups you belong to in the Steel Construction Industry?
A: I am on the board of directors for the American Subcontractor Association of Arizona, and I’m an active member of Alliance for Construction Excellence & CFMA.
